about

i was 24 when i wrote this song. at the time David Ryan Harris was my roommate on the Dionne Farris tour. my 1st tour. poor David had to teach me everything: how to play guitar, how 2 change guitar strings, how to set the tones on my guitar amplifier. i would even corner him with my demos n the midst of it all. i assumed measuring my songwriting ability was, at best, a minor annoyance to David. but one day in Japan, on a rare occasion when we had our own rooms, David & i were walkn back 2 the hotel when he said, "u know, some of yo shit is scary...n a good way. like that 'who will love me in winter'". the comment shook me. and it was all i needd. my 1st album wouldn't come out 4 another 10 yrs, but largely due 2 his reaction 2 that song, i held onto it and made it a cornerstone of my 1st album. I've included the TRIM version here bcuz its short bursts of guitar hopefully make my 1st teacher smile. the #10 tune n the countdown to my 50th bday is 'Who Will Love Me In Winter'

lyrics

“send up a smile 4 me, baby”
i say to the rising flame
a dynamic woe blows n from the cold
and brings back the loneliness again
ur voice, it haunts my nature
with words that i used 2 make u bleed
with 1 hand and my imagination
thot i’d nevr need 4 anything

but my spaceship crashed against the wall
my neighbors grass aint so green after all
i wouldn’t have a 2nd thot about the fall
but i’m wondering who will love me n winter

delusions of grandeur misled my
my adventurous spirit
love of the unknown rose like a stone
above my contentment
the autumn leaves fall from the trees
and hold me captive with a dance n the air
and i know w the passing of these
i must find love from somewhere
