not too many of u will recognize the #9 entry n the countdown of my favorite songs that i’ve recorded. written n 2008, this tune ranks so highly for me bcuz it came so easily. i didn’t have to fuss over it. the chord movement in the bridge, “i’m more man than u...”, arrangement, lyric, melody...all came together n one motion. i’m biased, but i think 'unaffected' is a very powerful tune; not bcuz of me, but bcuz of the way it came through me. i went 2 the studio 2 pen a demo 4 Mariah Carey or Mary J. Blige, and emerged w this sparse track. the lyric took an intimate encounter that was relayed to me by a woman, as i marveled at the different takeaways men & women have about a shared sexual experience. this was my description of the song a few years ago: "in the zeal to assert his dominance, he lost sight of the fact that his game was allowed to play on her field. she, on the other hand, has maybe given up more than she should have, and remains untransformed by the effort. it is a story of self-sacrifice, control, boredom, violation and interactions that lack satisfaction and dimension." it hints at assault, but is really more a regrettable, consensual "waste" of physical effort and time. the "waste" being more fascinating 2 me than 2 the people involved; which is sumthn that also stuck w me.
lyrics
Verse
Do you feel like a man when you take me (just) ‘cause you can?
Well, I didn’t feel a thing
Hook
I let the chains slip off my wrist
‘Cause you’re just not adequate to hold me captive
Now I’m pissed, ‘cause after all this I’m still unaffected
I’m still strangely unaffected
Verse
Back to the drawing board
Erase your name and your low score
I didn’t feel a thing
Hook
Bridge
(Ooooh) I’m more man than you after what we’ve been through
Not because you took it…but you couldn’t live up to it
Don’t forget, i let you do it
Hook
Maybe one will come along to make me forget the taste of you
And forgive me for my wasted youth
Just a beautiful jazzy rap album with buttery smooth flows versed with huge talent. It's not only lovely to the ears, but the lyrics are profound and empowering about the struggles that she faces. zhangtastic
